First year forward Chyzyk picks North Dakota

It was only a matter of time before Bryn Chyzyk made a Division I college commitment.

After all, scouts were basically lining up at the door to get more information about the dynamic first year Fargo Force forward. The University of North Dakota was one of those teams, and they may have hit the jackpot when the 19-year-old Virden, Manitoba native committed to the school this afternoon.

Chyzyk was a top flight forward last season in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League where he scored 22 goals and totaled 71 points for the Dauphin Kings.

After finding a niche on the penalty kill early in the season with the Force, Chyzyk took his game to another level when he was put on a line with Colton Hargrove and Minnesota-Duluth commit Austin Farley. That’s when the scouts starting to take note.

Chyzyk has scored at least one point in 14 of 18 games since December 2nd. He has produced consistently and he has also had big outbursts like a four point effort at Tri-City and a three point game in Lincoln earlier this month. His recent hot streak has propelled him to sixth in the USHL in goals with 20. Chyzyk has 31 points overall, which is second on the team behind Farley.

“Feels good to get the commitment out of the way and stay focused on the rest of the season here with Fargo,” Chyzyk said in a press release. “To grow up watching the Sioux play and have a dream come true to play for them, it’s pretty unbelievable.”

North Dakota will be getting a gritty, yet talented forward. Chyzyk is a first group penalty killer who has also dazzled on the power play at times this season. He has 10 special teams points on the season, including two shorthanded goals.

Chyzyk will go in the corner to dig out a puck, he will make a great pass to set up a teammate, and he will fire the puck into the smallest opening in the net. Call him a Jack of all trades of if you want, the bottom line is Chyzyk is a gamer and his motor never stops.

He earned the respect of his coaches and teammates when he was named an assistant captain early in the season. Chyzyk was the only first year player named captain with Nebraska-Omaha commits Brian Cooper and Tanner Lane being named the other captains. Lane has since been traded and Farley has taken his spot as an assistant captain.

With the commitment, Chyzyk becomes the third player in Fargo Force history to commit to North Dakota. Colten St. Clair played three years in Fargo before leaving for Grand Forks. Current Force starting goaltender Zane Gothberg, who was excited about Chyzyk’s commitment, is also committed to North Dakota.

There are now eight players on the Fargo Force roster that have a Division I commitment. Forwards Farley (UMD), Gabe Guertler (Minnesota), and Jonny Brodzinski (St. Cloud State) have commitments, along with defensemen Cooper (Nebraska-Omaha), Justin Wade (Notre Dame), and Willie Corrin (UMD). Gothberg, a goaltender, is committed to UND.
