The Fargo Force announced Monday, July 18 the hiring of John Marks as the new Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations. The team announced last month that former head coach, Jason Herter, was leaving the team to assume duties as an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
“The opportunity to interview and become the head coach is something I have coveted and wanted over the last three years” said John Marks. “A solid foundation has been laid out for the Fargo Force by Dean Blais, Steve Johnson and Jason Herter, and I hope to keep that foundation running and keep the team headed in the same direction to ultimately attain that goal that we all want to achieve-to raise the Clark Cup.”
John Marks began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of North Dakota in 1982, where he helped lead the Sioux to the 1987 NCAA Championship. He has also had stints as a head coach in the East Coast Hockey League, the Southern Professional Hockey League and the International Hockey League. He was most recently the head coach for the Winkler Flyers of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League during the 2010-11 season where he led the team to a 38-17-7 record.
Marks, a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks ninth overall in the 1968 NHL draft while playing for the University of North Dakota from 1967-70 where he was a two time All-American. He went on to play in the Blackhawks organization for 12 seasons, 10 of which were spent in the NHL where he tallied 275 points (112 goals, 163 assists).
“I’m thrilled that our search has led us to someone with such a quality hockey background like John”, said General Manager Jon Kram. “We are confident that he will continue the success of the Force both on and off the ice.”
Season tickets for the Fargo Force are currently on sale. Fans should contact the box office at 701.364.3672 for more information.
