The Fargo Force came up short in tonight’s battle against the Lincoln Stars 3-2 to split the weekend series in front of a crowd of 4,326 at Scheels Arena.
With a 4-2 win last night, the Force entered tonight’s game looking to capture the weekend sweep over the Stars. The Force struck first with an unassisted goal by Austin Ortega. Just moments later, Lincoln evened it up at one with a goal by Riley Bourbonnais. Both goalies, Bitzer for Linoln and Johnson for Fargo, had five saves on six shots through the first period.
Less than five minutes into the second period, Thomas Schutt launched one past Johnson to give Lincoln a 2-1 lead. Both teams battled hard the remaining of the second period but neither were able to score and Lincoln took a 2-1 lead into the final period.
Just a minute and a half into the third period, Alex Iafallo netted an unassisted goal, his 14th of the season, to bring the score to two a piece. As the Force came off the power play, both teams tangled in front of the Force net. Lincoln’s Phil Marinaccio snuck one past Johnson as the Stars gained a 3-2 lead half way through the final period. The Force pulled Johnson in the final minute of the game in a last chance effort but couldn’t make the comeback and dropped tonight’s game 3-2.
“They [Lincoln] are a good hockey team. We lacked execution and Cam kept us in the game tonight,” said Head Coach John Marks. “We could of put up eight points and now it’s back to four points. We are basically back where we started before the game last night.”
The Force will be heading to Sioux Falls to take on the Stampede in a Western Conference showdown on Wednesday, March 6. The team will be back in Fargo next Saturday, March 9 for another bout against the Lincoln Stars. Game time is 7:05pm but get here early for $1 hot dogs before puck drop.
